Jayde trains for the afternoon while Mary, Gemma and Jonathan head back to their respective classes. After class Mary and Casey head back to her dorms again and do some study in the rec room. It's getting late so they head to the dining hall for dinner. Mary grabs the food while Casey gets them each a soft drink from the dispenser. Neither touches their drinks until after they've eaten and then Mary discovers that hers is partially frozen, like a granita. Casey's is the same. He didn't notice anything odd when he got them, but then he wasn't really paying attention. They examine the machine and it seems normal. Casey experiments with different cup sizes, rates of flow, amounts of ice, etc and the phenomenon does not occur again. He's surrounded by about 30 or so cups when Mary points out that people are starting to look and they are gonna have to pay for all that soon and they head back to the rec room and keep on studying.
Gemma spend some time in the library reading about dreams and clairvoyance with respect to Jayde's little encounter. Most of the stuff she finds is very general. When she heads home she finds the TV on, the stereo up loud and Faith curled up on the couch with a bottle of vodka in her hand. Gemma turns the music down, asks if Faith is ok, she's pretty uncommunicative so Gemma heads upstairs to study them heads for bed.
Mary and Casey take an evening walk to the Psych department where Mary grabs a bunch of books for her perusal.
Jayde goes off to patrol in one of the local graveyards. Tonight there are two possible candidates on opposite ends of the cemetery so Jayde spends much of the early part of her patrol walking between the two waiting for them to rise. Jayde is just on her way back from visiting one grave when she notices a group of four people wandering between the graves a few rows up. She's used to spotting occasional goths out have sex on the graves but these people seem to be dressed normally, and although there are two guys and two girls they don't seem to have coupled off and their manner is rather business-like. Jayde moves closer to hear what they are saying. One of the females, who appears to be the leader, pulls out a piece of paper and examines it - they seem to be looking for a particular grave. Jayde follows them to the grave of one of her candidates and watches from the shadows as they put on game faces and wait for the new vampire to rise. Eventually he does and they help him out of the ground. They tell him they will take him to feed then to see their master, as was previously arranged. Jayde follows them back to their car, notes their number plate and follows in her own car as they drive into town, park near the centre of town then walk a long and convoluted route to a restaurant on the edge of the commercial district. Two of the group stay in the restaurant while the new vamp, the leader and one other head through a door to the back. Jayde goes to follow the three but is stopped by the female vamp in the restaurant.
"The toilet is occupied at the moment."
"Oh. I'll wait."
After a minute or so a woman exits from the back, the vamp goes in, returns and sits at a table by herself. The other vamp is waiting at the bar with a drink that he doesn't seem to be drinking. Neither he nor the female bat an eye as Jayde goes through to the back of the restaurant. There are several doors, one to the kitchen, two marked as toilets and one unmarked one, possibly an office. Jayde opens the door and enters. The second male vamp is behind the desk and glances up as she enters.
"Can I help you? The toilets are that way."
Jayde leaps across the office, stake at the ready. He sees it coming and manages to move and block slightly so that she gets him through the hand instead of the heart. A look of fear and anger crosses his face as he scrambles up out of his chair and goes to game face. Jayde tries to grab him by the throat but again he is too fast for her and manages to knock the stake from her hand. He is reaching behind himself for something, a knife on the desk, when Jayde slams the desk at him and pins him against the wall with it. Jayde grabs the knife, noting its intricate and brutal design (it seems familiar to her somehow) and uses it to slash at his throat. She's partway through beheading him when the knife gives her a sudden shock and she lets go of the hilt in surprise. The vamp uses the distraction to grab a large file off his desk and fling it at her. She dodges it and stakes him with a pencil. The knife clatters to the floor and she hears the sound of a car door from the back of the restaurant.
Jayde grabs the knife and her stake and heads outside, slamming open the back door to reveal the leader in the driver's seat of a car, the new vamp beside her flicking through a file on his lap. The leader panics as she spots Jayde, a petite blonde girl holding a knife and stake, and slams the car into reverse. Jayde leaps after the car, puts her fist through the passengers side window, grabs the file and the car screams off. There is the sound of running feet from inside the restaurant so Jayde carefully puts the file and knife to one side and waits. The two remaining vamps come running out and Jayde stakes the male before he even realises what's hit him. The female goes to punch Jayde, misses and Jayde stakes high and pins her to the ground. Jayde tries questioning her, breaks a few bones and witty banter is exchanged. "My brethren will be coming soon, you don't have long, you won't stop us, yadda yadda yadda" and Jayde kills her then heads home to flick through the file. It's mostly pictures of buildings of the high rise variety, floor plans for one and a map of San Francisco. The buildings all have different owners and are used for different things. There's no obvious connection between them other than that they are all in the central business district. Jayde gives up and goes to sleep.
Gemma wakes suddenly to the sound of a movement in her room. There's something moving near the end of her bed. Its silhouette seems vaguely primitive and it is holding a knife. Gemma flicks the light on. It's Faith and she is empty-handed.
"Sorry if I disturbed you. I thought I heard something moving around in here. Hey, I thought you said your mother was dead?"
She points to the space beside Gemma's bed. Leda is sitting there watching the two of them. Gemma gets all excited, Faith gets confused and heads out of the room while Leda and Gemma talk about the attack on Leda last week. Leda tells Gemma that the beast seems to be drawn here somehow, that the dreamcatcher is helping to keep it away, that it has been around since around the time that Faith was taken from jail and that it can't hurt Gemma as it is a spirit.
Jayde wakes to the sound of movement just outside her room. She goes out and finds Faith looking confused. Faith tells her that Gemma is having a conversation with Leda. Jayde is unsurprised and tells Faith that Leda is a ghost and Gemma is in tune with that sort of thing. She heads back to bed and is just about asleep again when she realises that Faith was able to see Leda so maybe she will be able to. Sure enough, when she gets to Gemma's room there is Leda, clearly visible, and on inspection becoming solid - they are able to feel her although when they hug her they start to sink into her slightly. The three talk for a while, revisiting the talk about auras and about the Chinese slayer who Leda helped by giving part of herself. Leda doesn't remember talking about this with Gemma in the past - time is strange for her. They probe a bit and see if she can remember events that haven't happened yet but it wouldn't appear so. They spend much of the night reminiscing and telling Leda all about things that happened while they were growing up. Leda remembers some events - she was present for them. At about 5am they hear a scream from downstairs. They run down to find chips spilt across the floor and Faith standing against the wall and looking around the room. She claims to have had a bad dream but doesn't want to talk about it.
Jayde makes pancakes seeing as it's practically morning. Leda manages to eat some, Faith asks Leda if its possible for her own loved ones to become ghosts, Leda recounts that she became one because when she helped the slayer "the one who took me there said that he'd leave some of me behind as thanks" and Faith wanders off upstairs. Leda also says that since the attack it's harder for her to do things. She's weaker, like she's in several places at once. She was hurt pretty badly but escaped by dissolving. She can sense the primal is still around. More chit-chat, they call Alex and she comes over. Leda seems to know her and Alex is a bit overwhelmed. Jayde tells everyone about her patrol last night and goes to get the file and knife but the knife seems to be missing. Gemma goes upstairs to ask Faith if she's seen a knife lying around. Faith is passed out on her bed with a bottle of vodka in one hand and the knife in the other. Remembering Faith's reaction when she brought her coffee yesterday, Gemma leaves her to sleep. Alex goes off to chase up some leads and calls in a bit to say that the newbie vamp used to be a structural engineer for the fire department. Leda and the girls experiment with leaving the house - Leda can do it but it is strenuous for her. Mary calls to find out why Gemma wasn’t in class, they tell her and she decides to come over, dropping Casey at the skate-park on her way. Faith comes downstairs and Gemma asks if she might have perchance seen a knife around the place maybe. Faith says yes. She woke up with it on her bed this morning. She also says it is her knife, given to her by a friend and that she last had it in LA. Leda has a bad feeling about the knife. Gemma does eerie things and tries to get images from it. She gets an overwhelming sense of hate from it and is trying to get more when Leda collapses on the table. She felt it, wave after wave of hate, and is now very weak and less well-defined than before. Everyone tries to think happy thoughts.
