Zombie (ritual)

Origin

Ritually raised Zombies date back to magics first mentioned in 1800BC. Zombies are often used as servants for Mages and Necromancers because of their unquestioning nature and great physical strength.

Appearance

Zombie appear human, although they do not heal or 'live' in the normal sense. A Zombie will appear as it did at the point of 'raising', plus whatever wear and tear has taken place.

Known information

Necromancers worked out a complex method of drawing a sliver of the soul back to the body to power the corpses and give it 'life'.

Strengths

Zombies seem to sense life, and thus need no eyes or other physical senses to be dangerous.

Zombies keep functioning even under application of large amounts of damage. Destruction of major limbs and bones, while permanent seems to eventually be 'adapted to'.

Zombies possess great strength, probably because of their disregard for their own bodies.

Weakness

Zombies also do not heal damage, so they carry with them all physical damage caused since the ritual. This may not sound too bad, but the body accumulates many nicks and scratches each day and the upper limit on the life of a Zombie seems to depend on the amount of physical effort the Zombie is used in and the initial state of death.

Zombies are destroyed by the destruction of the skull or brain. Upon death, the body remains, but will decay at an increasingly rapid rate before turning to dust in about 1 or 2 hours.

The Magics

There are a vast number of Zombie rituals, depending on the type (or flavor if you will) of the Zombie to be raised. Common forms of Zombies include: guard, warrior, servant, mule, hunting (special). The different rituals imbue the zombies with different attributes. Combat oriented zombies tend to last less time and the magic's enhance their senses and strength. Servant zombies can have less senses and 'brain' and greater strength or greater resistance to eventual decay.

The ritual required to create a zombie takes (generally, varying by flavor) about 5 hours, 4 of preperation and 1 of actual casting. Casting requires access to the body or grave. The types of materials required vary from reasonably cheap to expensive. Some of the materials are rare, but often only a pinch is required.
