Frederika, unsure of what to make of Torbj\"{o}rn, so she protects and observes him, until she can determine his true nature. Having observed him for a while and also meeting another of his kind once, she is aware that they are not Ghouls (as she first thought) or any other type of supernatural creature. She is suspects that the highlands may be messengers of the Gods as Torbj\"{o}rn claims, or some other supernatural creature. To this end, she will not allow harm to come to Torbj\"{o}rn if she can stop it. Torbj\"{o}rn is actually a Highlander. \subsection{History} \subsubsection{Pre Death History} His rich laugh rung out filling the little room. Cindy sat down, never taking her eyes off Torbj\"{o}rn. Never had she seen someone like this. Power was weaved into his very essence. She felt uneasy. Part of her mind chided her, surely Frederika would not let someone dangerous into her home. Cindy couldn't make much from the other man in the room. He looked like a vampire to Cindy, from his aura at least, but it was so hard to read his mind. He looked innocent enough, but that was what disturbed Cindy, unless you tried hard, this man just blended into the surroundings. Frederika had said that he was here to document things, some sort of scholar. Torbj\"{o}rn's huge bulk leaned back on the chair, it creaked under his muscled bulk. "Bring another drink my darling lady and I shall tell you where I came from". Cindy, sighed. Torbj\"{o}rn had waited till she sat down. She stood up and walked over to the bar. She picked up a pair of glasses, a bottle of whiskey and walked back to the table. "There we go." "I don't know if it was Thor, who seduced the wife of the blacksmith, during one of his visits to the Earth, or if I was born to one of the {\AE}sir woman and placed in the care of my mortal family." Torbj\"{o}rn concentrated on Cindy, telling his story to her, not to the man scratching notes in his little book. Cindy watched as he poured the drink into the glass, the colours and chaotic waves of the whiskey caught her eye. She could feel the random flow of the liquid, she let herself be lost in the wild patterns. His voice snapper her back to the beautifully decorated old room, "But the {\AE}sir blood is powerful in my human form." Cindy broke into a huge smile she felt her chest and stomach involuntarily jump as a laugh rose from her chest. Their eyes met and the laugh died into a single chuckle. His eyes sparkled like nothing she had ever seen before, once again she stared at the man in front of her and the bright halo of power woven around him. Suddenly, she thought back to all the events of the past few weeks. "I suppose it does sound stupid." He took a swig from the drink. "No.. Yes.. no. Look, a month ago, I would have thought it crazy, but not now. I really want to know." "My mother died giving birth to me. Times were hard and my father had to work long hours. I grew quickly and my body was strong", he swallowed the rest of the drink in the glass and poured another, as he continued. "Soon it became clear I was deaf." He paused and swallowed, his face becoming serious. "You can't know what thats like. This was centuries before sign language and most people couldn't read anyway." He broke eye contact with Cindy and looked down at the table. "Having no language, unable to hear or read. Growing up with no language in your mind." He chuckled, "Makes you dim witted. But that isn't the worst of it." Torbj\"{o}rn's eyes filled with a deep, never forgotten pain. "Seeing other people talk, but not understanding. Knowing you are missing out on something that everyone else does naturally. Some universal secret. It drives you crazy. You scream for attention and see those you love try to understand what you want. You see them share thoughts but you can only guess what it it is from their reaction." Cindy's smile disappeared and she shuddered. Unwanted memories of her childhood came back. Cindy swallowed, thinking of how she had the opposite problem. "My strength made me useful for manual labor. But as I couldn't communicate, I needed guidance and help all the time. I grew used to being cut off." \subsubsection{Becoming} "When I was 24, after two hard years, raiders probably just as desperate as we were becoming, attacked taking our stores. Everyone fought, but it was useless. Those not killed fled, I became separated in the confusion and I was alone. I wandered and came back to the farm, where the raiders were sacking the place. Not understanding what was happening and anger welling up inside me, took over. Blinded by rage, I charged the closest one. Thats all I remember." "I awoke later, covered in blood red snow. I stood up and saw the raiders gone and the farm burnt. I stood in a pool of blood soaked snow, but I was not hurt. My clothes were torn and cut, but I had no understanding. I remember feeling alive, standing there, clothes cut up and freezing in the snow." "Soon every one else returned. With the farm gone, we made our way to the coast and back to the homeland. We returned and my father put his smithing skills to use. Ever since that night, I had felt power in my veins. I became restless and the urge to travel took me, but I could not say this to anyone. I had never been away from my family." Cindy noticed that the dark seriousness had drained from his face, replaced with a proud smile. "Thats when my blood led me to Burfrost, place of the Rainbow Bridge. Thats where I met the Gods." \subsubsection{Turning point.} Cindy jumped and gave a small gasp as a new voice behind her whispered, "I'm no God." She spun around and saw an exquisitely beautiful woman with blonde hair, crystal green eys and perfect features, looking like a model who just out of a photo shoot. Torbj\"{o}rn leapt to his feet. A look of mild amusement crossed the woman's face. Cindy noticed the aura around the woman change. It went from a bright human aura to almost invisibly pale aura, spread out over the whole room, a vampire. Luckily Cindy found it easy to spot Frederika in her various shapes, probably because Frederika allowed her to, like now, she was sure her husband was totally confused. Torbj\"{o}rn lowered his head, "As you say my lady." He sat quietly. The man with the note pad sat just as quietly as before, not reacting to Frederika's presence, although he had stopped scribbling. Frederika nodded acknowledging Torbj\"{o}rn's silence. With a silent wave of the hand, she indicated that we could continue. Everything she did seemed like a granting her express permission to specifically Cindy. Silently, Frederika glided to a huge old chair and slid into its form. Frederika always wore long flowing clothes that covered her feet when she was home and Cindy never heard her make a noise when walked. I must ask if she actually walks, Cindy commanded herself. Both Torbj\"{o}rn and Cindy watched as Frederika turned to watch them. Cindy marveled at the way that every move she made looked so full of grace, just like they were ... "When I arrived", Cindy started again and realized that she had been staring at Frederika. She turned to look back at Torbj\"{o}rn as he continued, "the place was fighting a losing battle against Christian invaders, giants and monster wolves. It was here, defending the home of the Gods that I met Her. She was but a child...." "I was no child, even then. I have to make sure you tell the story accurately for our guest here." Frederika indicated the man with the pen. Torbj\"{o}rn turned, startled, as if remembering him at last. It occured to Cindy that Torbj\"{o}rn couldn't hear the scrawling of the pen, if he was really deaf. "You appeared as a child to me then, my lady." "Never trust looks Cindy," Frederika said smiling, "underestimation has been the death of untold thousands." Frederika turned to Torbj\"{o}rn. "After a week of following me around, she followed me hunting, although I never saw or smelt her. I smelt my victim and crept up on it and looked into a clearing to see her, amongst wolves. I knew she would be eaten, so I leapt into the clearing. Barely had I entered the clearing, when something rang out in my mind. Terrified, I fled." He turned to Frederika. She smiled sweetly back at him, as if she was not one of the most dangerous creatures on the Earth, but rather the most loving person ever born. "Fled from many children since then?" He shook his head, laughing, "Only a few, mother." He turned back to Cindy, "She caught up with me, followed by the wolves. I had never known fear like this. I could not drive it from my mind. I panicked and in my haste, tripped. She was upon me, picked me up, spun me round and looked into my eyes." "Images burst into my mind. Images, scenes, things I didn't comprehend. Soon, soothing images and I came to understand. I heard my first words." His gaze returned to Frederika. "I am forever in her debt, she gave her time to me, to teach me, as one teaches a child. Taught me to hear people with my eyes, to read, to think. She let me in on the secrets that people shared in my presence that I never before understood." Frederika smiled and looked away. Embarrassed? thought Cindy. Frederika turned towards her with unapproving eyes. "Hardly, at my age. I've seen it all, young lady.", she admonished. It always surprised Cindy when she read minds like that. Cindy wondered if the man with the pen was as easy to read as her own mind. Were words really needed? Frederika looked at Cindy and smiled. \subsubsection{Hela} "After months in the wilderness, under you most wonderful tutelage, ma'am", Torbj\"{o}rn continued, addressing Frederika, "I was eager to return to civilization. Now I understood what I had missed. I understood things. I wanted to experience the life I had missed." He paused. Frederika stood up, sliding the chair neatly under the table. Cindy suddenly found the gesture outrageously funny considering who she was. Frederika turned Torbj\"{o}rn, "I don't know why you are embarrassed, we have spoken of it hundreds of times. I am not your mother, or your God. You don't need my approval." She waited. He remained silent. "Al right, I will leave then." Torbj\"{o}rn watched Frederika leave. Cindy watched, confused. Frederika could hear for miles, and this was her haven. What good would leaving do? Then it dawned on her, he could only `hear' by reading lips, he might have had no idea about Frederika's perceptions. Surely he knew she knew everything in this, her domain? "When we returned, we made our way to where the Giants were massing. My lady sought out a Valkyrie, Hela, widow of Sven, son of Hagad, who was fighting the loosing battle against the Giants. Killing and killing, night after night in glorious battle after battle. She was the first great hero I had met and I was very nervous and self conscious." Cindy smiled at Torbj\"{o}rn's childlike honesty. For someone of his age, he really was still childlike. "She listened to Sif when she spoke, it was obvious they knew each other. After they had spoken, she came over and talked to me. She was one of the first people I spoke to, so she had to repeat words as much of it was still all new to me." "When I asked her to repeat things, she laughed at me and called me some kind of simpleton. She laughed at me endlessly and although I was almost as strong as she, she was right, I had no hearing and my understanding of things is simple." "She asked me if it was as Sif had told her, that I was one of the endless breed. I asked her what that meant, but she just drew a sword and ran me through. I fell to the ground, clutching the wound." "'You are as slow as a giant, fool. Are you sure you aren't some bastard Giant offspring?' she asked, laughing in my face as I bled on the ground before her." "She soon quietened as my wounds healed in front of her eyes. She pulled me to my feet with inhuman strength, 'How do you do this, simpleton?' she spat in my face. That was when Sif walked up and the two talked about me. Apparently Sif had met one of my kind before. We are like them in that we heal wounds, but we are not blood drinkers." "I lay on the ground, feeling my insides knit together as the stood above me and spoke about me. To cut the story short, Hela, realizing the benefit a fighter such as herself who could fight during the day would bring, Hela quickly invited me into her group." Cindy smiled, he was smitten with her. She could see it, even without her second sight. This was so romantic, immortal love, down through hundreds of years. She almost laughed aloud. "We fought for decades and decades, killing Giants and anything that threatened Burfrost, but eventually, we were overcome. Not by force, but by the sapping effect of the Christians who stole away our kind, weakening us to the Giants attacks. Hela blamed the Valkyries lead by Brunhilde for abandoning us at a critical moment, but it was inevitable. Hela insisted that it was better to die fighting, so once Burfrost fell, she started rampaging over the country." "The two of us fought as well. Hela insisted I was some throwback, probably with some giant blood, but I knew differently. I felt the power in my blood. I knew it was Odin's power. We had fought one battle with Thor and although I never met him personally, I felt his presence and knew that he was my father, my strength. Although she denies it, I think that Frederika is Sif, Thors wife come to look after his bastard sons." "Anyway, that is how I came to be here. After Hela and I split up, she tore towards Rome, and any Christian city. Sif had long ago left us, disappearing one night. I wandered from place to place, living as a mercenary. Knowing that Burfrost had fallen made everything seem pointless." Cindy obviously missed something, "What was at Burfrost? Rainbow bridge?" "Burfrost is the town in Midgard, where the bridge to Asgard was. The bridge to heaven, I guess, although that is a Christian term." Cindy tried see if he was joking, but his aura never wavered. She tried to come to terms with what he was saying. From what Frederika had said, he was almost 1000 years old and he was saying that he had fought with Thor against Giants in Norway. Cindy's head spun. These last weeks had really opened her eyes. Their was a tap at the door and Frederika popped her head in. "Finished yet?", she asked innocently, as if she didn't know. Torbj\"{o}rn nodded. She opened the door and came in, holding it open. "Leave us, please". Torbj\"{o}rn walked over to the door and, bowing as he passed her, left. She closed the door and slid over to the chair again and slipped into it. "Your opinion, Aristotle?" The man put down his pen and turned to answer, "He is amazing, Lord. He is simple, as you say, but his abilities and age are unquestionable. I have never seen anything like it." Frederika smiled and, tilting her head back, rolled it round her neck. "I don't think it relates to our kind. What do you make of all this little Mage?" Cindy swallowed, "Umm, I haven't seen anything like him ever before. His life is so tightly bound. Not at all free like a normal person, but... umm... its hard to explain". "Don't worry, you will be lucky to meet any more like him. The others of his kind are much more careful about being spotted. But watch for them, they have a part to play in this unfolding future." \subsubsection{... and Torbj\"{o}rn} Torbj\"{o}rn walked out past Frederika. He wanted to continue, to say more of Hela, but something in his mind told him not to speak of her here, with the mother so close. He knew he would soon take Hela as wife, freeing her from her walking death and eternal fight. He wanted to speak loudly about it, shout it out, tell everyone, but something told him he must not. For the first time in his life, Torbj\"{o}rn kept a secret from the woman he considered to be one of his Gods and, to his great surprise, she seemed not to notice. \subsection{Influence} Torbj\"{o}rn has little influence of importance, which may mean he is passed over as the characters scramble for power, but he has influence with 'all the right people'. He can be used to influcence Frederika and especially Ingrid and as such, he can effect the outcome of the fight for the city. \subsubsection{Highlanders} Because Torbj\"{o}rn is more convinced that he is of the {\AE}sir, and knows little of the highlanders, he has almost no influence amongst them. His lack of resources and influence keep him from contacting many other highlands and makes him very hard to detect as he leaves little trace of his presence. "I have lived long, I have seen much. I have met others who claim to be my brothers, but they deny The All Father (Odin). Most of them prove to be treacherous bastard children of Giants, and attempt to take my head, so I take theirs with the power of Thor in my sword." \subsubsection{Crime Organizations} Torbj\"{o}rn, because he lives on the \wod\ streets often comes in contact with criminal organizations. Sometimes, his soft hearted nature drives him to interfere with criminal organizations, but aside from the occasional vigilante action, he has no organized influence. "I said leave her alone!" \subsubsection{Military} Torbj\"{o}rn does not fit into any society very well, so he spends a lot of time as a professional soldier. This lets him pass through time without attracting attention to his long life and also keeps him up to date, somewhat, with technology. He makes some friends in the military and has probably fought in most major wars, sometimes on various sides. "Why yes, I was in the War too. Let me buy you a drink, my fellow warrior." \subsubsection{Supernatural Creatures: Vampires} Torbj\"{o}rn has influence with the following Kindred. \begin{description} \item [Ingrid (Hela)] Ingrid and Torbj\"{o}rn share the same society of birth. Torbj\"{o}rn is aware of Ingrid's nature as a Valkyrie and vampire and he is also aware that if her were to marry her, she would become a mortal woman (he suspects he would also become a mortal man). Torbj\"{o}rn considers her the perfect woman and has been in love with her for centuries. She considers him to be a reject and would never consider marring him under normal circumstances, but with the Settite influence on her, her resistance is weakening and may well be open to manipulation by Torbj\"{o}rn. "When I have her cloak, I shall have her heart. We shall be happy together and she shall be free of her eternal night." \item [Uri] Uri has examined Torbj\"{o}rn and, like Frederika, considers him to be a divinely sired human. Unwilling to interfere with the Gods, Uri will not interfere with Torbj\"{o}rn. "You are wise, Uri, I shall heed your words." \item [Frederika] Aware of differences in Torbj\"{o}rn and Ingrid, because of their Norse origin, that she cannot explain, Frederika is willing to consider and treat Torbj\"{o}rn the son of God. Torbj\"{o}rn thinks that Frederika is one of the {\AE}sir and his mother in some way. Either the wife of Thor, Sif, looking after Thor's Earthy bastards or another of the {\AE}sir who slept with some great hero and abandoned the baby on Earth. Frederika tries to convince him otherwise, but he is unwilling to believe otherwise, as she `spoke' to him, and only a God could do that. She sometimes feeds him the 'Mead of Valhalla' (as he considers it), her blood, although what effect this has on his highlander nature is unknown. "Sif, you made me what I am, I am in your debt forever." \item [Setites] In the last 40 years, the Settites became aware of Torbj\"{o}rn's influence on Ingrid and have been grooming him for this time. They have been slowly influencing his dreams, getting him ready to come to Melbourne and move on Ingrid. As Frederika is unsure of Torbj\"{o}rn, he may have great influence over Ingrid, with out Frederika interfering. The Settites have been careful to make sure that this influence is not detected by Frederika. The Settites figure that if they can't get Ingrid on their side, then second best is that Torbj\"{o}rn take her out of the picture. "Who?" \end{description} \subsubsection{{\AE}sir} What the {\AE}sir's reaction to Settite interference in Torbj\"{o}rn is is unknown. Infact, what and where the {\AE}sir are is not really detailed here. :) Just as well. "Let us fight these Giant spawn, great ones!" \subsubsection{Supernatural Creatures: Werewolfs} Get of Fenris, Torbj\"{o}rn's day, they still kulled humans in the more remote areas. "They are born of the Giants and that blood can never be forgotten. Their sire, Fenris, shall break free and swallow the sun and then they shall hunt as all down." "Keep your distance untrustworthy cur." \subsection{Role-playing} Torbj\"{o}rn is a child, really. His upbringing and lack of language in the formative years have left him unprepared for the politics of the \wod. He is an odd mix of his time and modern times. His attitudes are about the same as when he was young, but he has adapted (as needed) to modern life. Torbj\"{o}rn wants only to live the hero's life, to fight great battles and win great victories, but he has tempered his views somewhat in the age of the individual. He has accomplished great deeds and now he wishes to retire with his woman (Ingrid) and raise 100 children (although I don't think he will help change them :). \subsubsection{Odd things} How odd is a 1000 year old? \subsubsection{Disadvantages} He is quite mentally slow for someone of his huge age. He is deaf, but is brilliant at reading lips, so most people don't notice. He can only hear Frederika's voice, although lately people have been coming to him in his dreams and for the first time, he has heard them speak. \subsubsection{Advantages} He is being watched and protected by Frederika. She tracks him with a charm she gave him and he never takes off. If possible she will protect him. She can teleport to him, but will only do so in times he is in danger. She has killed a few highlanders fighting him. He is also watched and aided by the Settites. They have discovered his ability to influence Ingid and have been keeping him `on ice' for this time. They will not want to see him harmed before his time to be useful. Ingrid fears him. He is physically almost equal to her. Normally, she considers herself mentally superior to him, but with the Settite influence, she fears him, because he finds modern technology easier than she does. He wants to take her as his bride and will probably do so if he can show he is superior to her physically. Torbj\"{o}rn can make empowered weapons. He has learned to make weapons that are similar to Garou klaive. Frederika feeds him blood sometimes. Whenever he meets her, she tends to `top him up'. He acts like a ghoul with a blood pool of 20-30. This also grants him Potence-2, Celerity-2, Fortitude-3. \subsubsection{Tactics} Torbj\"{o}rn has few cunning tactics, his simplistic view of life leads him to rely on his physical superiority and sometimes, Frederika's blood. Once or twice the last words of his enemy has been "Noone could be that stupid". \subsection{Plans} \begin{quote} "Love is like a snowmobile racing across the tundra \\ and then suddenly it flips over, pinning you underneath.\\ At night the the Ice Weasels come."\\ {\em -- "Life in Hell", Matt Groening } \end{quote} Torbj\"{o}rn has one plan: to take one of Ingrid's cloaks. After he does this, he will be able to take her as his wife. Then he can settle down and his great saga will be over, he can have children and die as men do. \subsection{The Name} His name, Torbj\"{o}rn Brednacke means The bear of Thor, Broadneck. \subsection{Raw Numbers} \begin{description} \item [Name] Kurt Ragnar, Torbj\"{o}rn, Thor \begin{figure} \begin{tabular}{|lll|} \hline Name: Kurt, Thor's Son. &&\\ \hline Concept: son of a God & Born/`died'/Age: 979ad/999/28 & \\ Sex: male & Height: 6'4" & Weight: 120kg \\ Nature: Follower & Demeanor: Gallant & Hair: unkempt blonde \\ Eyes: blue & Haven: streets & \\ \hline Strength: 6 & Charisma: 5 & Perception: 4 \\ Dexterity: 3 & Manipulation: 3 & Intelligence: 2 (1/4)\\ Stamina: 4 & Appearance: 4 & Wits: 4 \\ \hline Acting: 2 & Animal Ken: 4 & Bureaucracy: 0 \\ Alertness: 5 & Drive: 1 & Computer: 0 \\ Athletics: 3 & Etiquette: 2 & Finance: 1 \\ Brawl: 5 & Firearms: 2 & Investigation: 3 \\ Dodge: 5 & Melee: 7 & Law: 0 \\ Empathy: 4 & Music: 1 & Linguistics: 2 \\ Intimidation: 2 & Repair: 2 & Medicine: 3 \\ Leadership: 3 & Security: 1 & Occult: (Norse) 5 \\ Streetwise: 2 & Stealth: 5 & Politics: 1 \\ Subterfuge: 2 & Survival: 1 & Science: 2 \\ carousing: 4 & archery: 4 & art history: 3 \\ sense deception: 3 & blacksmith: 3 & engineering: 3 \\ throwing: 4 & blind fighting: 4 & forensics: 2 \\ & cooking: 3 & geology: 2 \\ & falconry: 2 & heraldry: 3 \\ & fishing: 5 & literature: 4 \\ & gambling: 4 & lore, kindred: 2\\ & game playing: 3 & lore, lupine: 2\\ & hunting: 4 & lore, spirit: 4\\ & leatherworking: 3 & lore, highlander: 2\\ & lip reading: 6 & metallurgy: 3 \\ & lock picking: 4 & theology, Norse: 5\\ & mechanic: 4 & toxiciology: 2\\ & pickpocket: 3 & \\ & singing: -1 & \\ & tracking: 3 & \\ & traps: 3 & \\ \hline Conscience: 5 & Self-Control: 3 & Courage: 5 \\ Willpower: 7 & Blood Pool: 10 to 40 & BP per turn: 0 to 10 \\ Path Rating: 10 & Path Type: Humanity & \\ Potence: 0 or 2 & & Resources: 1 \\ Celerity: 0 or 2 & & Mentor: (special) 3 \\ Fortitude: 0 or 3 & & Allies: 5 \\ & & Arcane 5 \\ \hline \end{tabular} \caption{Stats: Torbj\"{o}rn} \end{figure} \item [Merits and Flaws] Berserker (-2), Soft Hearted (1), Deaf (4), Vampire Companion(s) (-3 to -lots), Luck (-3), Huge Size (-4), Confused (2), Code of Honor (1), Pitiable (1) \item [Image] Kurt appears as a huge 25 year old, with blonde hair, a huge orange/red beard and striking blue eyes. His size is all muscle bulk, not fat. His appearance could be intimidating, but he radiates a child like innocence that makes him popular with everyone. He dresses in a cheap/grunge style, as he never has money enough to become comfortable. He seems simple and child like most of the time, but is capable of striking insight sometimes. \item [Rituals and Magic] \begin{description} \item [Mother's gift] Scarab. The Scarab that he always carries is a gift from Frederika. When he senses he is in danger, it warns her. She can then zero in on the scarab. \item [Son of Odin's fist] Sword. His last sword broke 200 years ago, so he has forged another. The sword has no set powers, although it is coated in silver. When he is in combat, he believes that Odin's falcons see him, allowing divine intervention. Given his luck, their may be something to that. \item [Conscience] bracelet. A bracelet in the form of a snake eating its tail. It is reminds him to fight giant evil, even though the giants are no longer to be found openly, their work is evident. Ingrid had it made and bound a giant (wyrm?) spirit in it. If she wakes the snake, by using the waking rune, it will drag the wearer into the Umbra where the spirit will attack. She made it so that the spirit will be almost powerless after it has accomplished this, as she does not want him killed. This is Ingrid's emergency button. She felt he would come after her one day, so she created this to make sure she has an out. \end{description} \end{description}
