Unknown Armies - Family and Friends

Father: Robert Wilson (4th October 1955)

Robert is from a good, conservative family. While not particularly wealthy or influential, they are the kind of solid, respectable people who become the backbone of the local community. Robert showed both academic and sporting excellence from an early age, and swiftly became the focus of the family's aspirations for the next generation.

He met Dinara while at college. He was attracted by both the sweetness of her nature and her dedication to her work, and fascinated by the exoticness of her eastern european background. He weathered the objections raised by his family and married her after his first year of work out of college. Robert's famliy gradually become reconciled to his choice as they came to know Dinara better.

He moved easily into a well-paid job for a national firm after college, where his hard work and charm kept him moving steadily up the ladder. While glad that Dinara (now Diana) was successful and respected as a teacher, he was glad when she fell pregnant and agreed to give up her job to look after the children (and him).

Robert is confident, hard-working and solidly conservative. He embraces his family's hopes that he will add lustre to the name of Wilson as their first sucessful, professional college graduate.

Mother: Diana Wilson nee Dinara Umanov (15th March 1957)

Dinara's parents emigrated to the United States after World War II. Glad to be out of the chaos and horror of Europe, they were intensely grateful to the country that accepted them. Working hard, they strove to learn English, hold down good jobs and generally fit in to life in America.

Dinara, and her older brother Tomas were both born in America. While Tomas chose to follow his father in the family furniture business, Dinara went to college to become a teacher. Here she met Robert. He seemed to represent all of the best things about America - youth, vitality, intelligence, confidence and dilgence. Not to mention beauty. She was stunned when he not only noticed her, but actively started to court her. Dazzled by his attentions, firmly encouraged by her ecstatic family, she married him as soon as she finished her degree.

While she adored the 2 years she spent teaching, she readily agread to Robert's request that she stay at home once she fell pregnant. She also agreed to "anglicise" her name to Diana. While she could not give him the son he so obviously craved, she was proud of her two beautiful daughters. While be never seemed to quite forgive Lindsay for not being a boy, Rebecca soon became the apple of his eye.

Dinara is warm, giving, and hard-working, the calm centre which anchors her family. She remains ever thankful of the opportunties that life has handed her and her family - the chance to make a life in this wonderful country, and to be the wife of such a respected and admired man.

Siblings: Rebecca "Becky" Wilson (19th September 1983)

Becky is a golden child. She is one of those lucky few for whom life seems to smile...

When Robert found out Dinara was pregnant again, he was quietly confident that this time he would have the son he so wanted. Which made the birth of another daughter all the more galling. When it became apparent that Dinara would be unable to have anymore children, it was the last straw. Still, despite his disappointment, Robert had strong views on what was expected of him as a father. So he helped Dinara with her, resigning himself to the loss of his dreams... and then the unexpected happened. He found himself completely besotted with this little creature, who seemed to radiate love and joy at him whenever he picked her up.

At first Dinara was relieved that he seemed to accepting her after all. Until she noticed that he seemed to prefer her to Lindsay. Dinara set herself to make sure the both daughters would feel equally loved, equally wanted. Yet despite her best efforts, she knew the Lindsay felt Robert's preference of Becky. Still, the family was a warm and loving one, and while there was the expected sibling rivalry, it was clear that her daughter's loved each other.

Then two things happened. Becky was "discovered" one day while they were shopping. This led to teen beauty competitions, even to some local modelling jobs. While Lindsay seemed happy for Becky's success, it was clear she felt she could not compete with Becky in this area. Robert's pride in his daughter's accomplishments, and his sometimes tactless introductions didn't help either. Becky never seemed to become puffed up with the extra attentions... still she was a child and children can cut with words without realising it.

Then Lindsay started getting in trouble at school. This was the first serious cloud on Becky's horizon. She stuck with her sister, defending her, charming people out of their growing unease around Lindsay. Until the day she watched Lindsay pick a fight. They had walked past the girls together, so she KNEW that they hadn't said anything to Lindsay. I mean, she knew they disliked Lindsay, but the point was they hadn't spoken. So why would Lindsay just grab Carla and demand that she apologise for calling her a "weird freak bitch on drugs" or she was going to push her face through the locker door? She had never seen her sister like that: so angry, almost out of control. She pulled Lindsay away and got them both home, but it was too late. Carla's father had called up and complained about Lindsay's behaviour. And dad was angry at her too, and that was just so unfair. So she stormed up to Lindsay's room after dinner, and demanded to know what her problem was. Lindsay just stared at her, her face blotchy from crying. Finally she said "You wouldn't understand". That was it!

From that point on, Becky quietly distanced herself from Lindsay. She was popular enough that the growing cloud of fear and hatred directed at Lindsay didn't seem to affect her. Her Mom was there, and she knew she was the apple of her Father's eye. In fact, she hardly seemed to see Lindsay anymore. So it was ok, wasn't it? If anything, people seemed to like and praise her more: she was "that angel Becky", so different from her troublesome sister. What did it matter if she missed her big sister sometimes, winced at the bruises she saw on her legs and arms from the fights, worried about the expression she began to see in her eyes when Lindsay thought people weren't looking?

She was Becky, the golden child. Everything would be alright.

Employer: Ruth Harvey (27th July 1947)

Mentor?: Carlos Santalo (?)

Carlos is a cab driver in Aurora. He seems to have a special affinity and love of the city: his city, Chicago. Meeting Lindsay by chance(?) one night as she tried to run away, again, he rescued her from the visions threatening her, and offered to help her.

Carlos is a mysterious and secretive figure. He seems worn by life, fascinated by the city and it's teeming life, yet choosing to always live on it's edges. His past is largely unknown: by this own account his early years were "troubled" and he barely survived them. Until he discovered the City...

For someone so used to living on the margins of life, his reaching out to Lindsay would seem to represent a huge leap of trust. Yet for all the harshness of his life, he still seems to have retained the ability to care - something Lindsay desperately needs. It is clear he sees in Lindsay an echo of his own struggles, which would seem to make him an ideal mentor for her.
