Well, if you want a well thought out answer, Damien has written a very fine piece on the subject (damn, not currently available due to websiteus interruptus). But if you just want some random musings, this is what I think:

obsession, creative outlet, social embarrasment, black hole for money, source of the boring - labrythine - ten-minute-long - anecdote, consumer of time, chance to meet other wonderful weirdos, totally addictive pastime! :) :):)
